Before McCarthy's had a designated baking kitchen, they used to play a little game called What Happens if We Fry This in the Main Kitchen? One day, scone dough was the “this” in question and, a little powdered sugar later, The Sconut was born! “Just like Guinness, many of the best things happen almost accidentally,” says owner Neville Gardner.
The Sconut is made with buttermilk scone dough and served with sticky toffee pudding and Bank Street Creamery ice cream. It's topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit for garnish. Though it's a strong contender as McCarthy's most popular dessert item, it can be ordered all day, every day. “We also take orders if you would like to bring them home to your family,” says Gardner. And when asked what one should order to drink with their Sconut, Gardner responds, “Whiskey, of course.”
Another out-of-the-ordinary item offered at the pub: their wings. “We have unique wings,” says Gardner, explaining that McCarthy's wings are marinated, baked and then grilled. “You can't get that many places, if any, in the Lehigh Valley.” Their wings come char-broiled with a Guinness mustard sauce or a Jameson barbecue sauce.
With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, Gardner invites locals to stop by McCarthy's and Donegal Square: “Your Celtic destination where no passport is required,” he says. Enjoy a whole week of Irish fun, consisting of a pipe band on the 17th, a best men's legs in a kilt contest, food and retail specials and live music.
