Totally Tonal

Totally Tonal

There is something extremely modern and chic about a one-color, head-to-toe look, and it's an effortless way to take your style to the next level. Imagine being able to put your outfit together under 30 seconds. Sign me up! I like to stay within a neutral color palette (grey, black, white, nude, etc.). I find that I get more wear out of the pieces and I can incorporate them with prints and patterns. That doesn't mean you can't add color with an accessory—you just don't want to resemble Big Bird. Below are three monochromatic looks that could be worn at any time of the day.

Never Basic Black

An all-black look does not mean that you just came from a funeral; it's all about the separates and how they coordinate. A black kimono top is not only free flowing for comfort but also brings a level of femininity. Wear it with a zipper-detailed skinny jean to balance out the look. I'd choose something like these silver-studded booties because they have a low heel, which means they can be worn anywhere, and I fell in love with the subtle star design on the back. Black aviator sunglasses, available at francesca's, Lehigh Valley Mall would complete this look perfectly. They are one of my staple accessories, and you can find them in a variety of lens sizes that are appropriate for your face shape.

Style Tip:

I am a stickler for proportion, which is magnified when you're wearing a one-color look. If your top is going to be billowy or have a lot of fabric, opt for a slightly fitted bottom and vice versa.

Grey All Day

A heather grey slim sweater skirt is as cozy as it is chic. With this look, you want to keep the top and bottom identical colors, which is why this heather grey scoop-neck tee (from the same brand) would be perfect. Fun fact: when designers create collections, they work from pre-selected color swatches, so buying pieces out of that collection with the same color name will not have a variance in shade. To finish the look, combine lace-up sneakers with a suede biker jacket and a silver backpack (This bag was a late night online impulse buy for me, but I use it all of the time and have gotten so many compliments).

Style Tip:

For a one-color look, I try to have two pieces that are the same exact color and shade. If everything you are wearing is blue, but they are all different shades of blue, including your accessories, you lose the elevation of the total ensemble.

Never-Fail Nude Tones

Nude and blush tones are probably my favorite right now. I am fair skinned and have blonde hair, so in the cooler temperatures, these colors can wash me out a bit. To combat this, I just add extra bronzer to give myself a glow. A great transitional piece for the seasons is a dusty rose duster jacket with pockets. Layer the jacket with a beautiful satin jumpsuit that can be worn with or without a fitted tee/bodysuit underneath. Add a pink blush ankle strap sandal or slide, and then finish the look by cinching the duster with a nude or blush belt.

Style Tip:

Mixing pieces that have different fabrics are perfect for monochromatic looks because it adds interest. Try a suede trench with satin pant or a linen shirt with faux leather shorts for warmer weather.
