Plant Now; Pick Later

You don't have to be a nature enthusiast to enjoy wildflower blooms. And with this expert advice, you don't even have to be a seasoned gardener to have a beautiful wildflower garden come spring. After reading the following tips, you will be convinced that fall wildflower planting is the best way to achieve a bountiful spring garden and enviable curb appeal.

First and foremost, fall planting allows for wildflower seeds to settle into the ground during the winter which is why these blooms can be seen a full two weeks before spring-planted flowers. Not to mention the ease of fall planting as a result of many more “good planting days” when compared to working around the numerous tricky weather days of the spring. And if you're not already ready to plant, garden tools in hand, after reading the above facts, fall wildflower planting eliminates the annoyance of weeds because the weed seeds are dormant in the fall. The following step-by-step instructions will guarantee you an abundance of wildflowers in the spring.

Choose the ideal time and place for planting

The best time for our area usually begins late September or October up until the ground freezes.

Rid your planting area of weeds

This includes turning the soil with a shovel and removing all old growth.

Spread seed evenly over the soil

Experts suggest thoroughly mixing wildflower seed with white builders sand to make it easier to see spots where seed hasn't been sprinkled while ensuring a random mix of different wildflowers.

Compress the area where you planted

To “squash” your seed into the loose soil, walk over it with bare feet.

Follow these four easy directions and by the time the warm weather rolls around your garden will be the talk of the town!
