Not only is Moravian Academy of Bethlehem taken major steps to generate their own solar energy this past year (see page 49 of our April issue) they have additional plans and programs in the works that directly involve their students. Here's a quick look at what they're doing.
Doing Good Digitally
MA has gone digital by providing seventh through ninth-grade students and faculty with either iPads or MacBook Air laptops through their One-To-One Technology Program. The devices have cut down on the school's paper usage and are used to expand learning in new ways every day. Not a bad way to go green!
Talkin' Trash, Makin' Fashion
Students in MA's Upper School recently showed off their sewing skills at the second annual Project Trashway, a fashion show where the looks are created from recycled goods, trash and thrift store attire. Model Sasha Cheer, Class of 2015, strutted her stuff on the runway in a restructured thrift-store dress with woven trash bags and a necklace made from a broken baseball. The duds, designed by Grace Vorosmarti, Class of 2015, took home awards for “most publishable” and “trashiest.”
Teacher Talk
It's not just the students who are jumping into the green movement with two feet. The administration and faculty are dedicated to providing information electronically to save paper. There is also a “green fact” in each daily announcement, which serves as a perfect environmental reminder for the day.
Young Learners
Little ones love to get involved with green projects, like making pinwheels to learn about wind energy in the first grade. Third and fourth graders learn about alternative energy sources, while second grade students study conservation of resources. Earth Day is a day of celebration for all students in the Lower School with songs, skits and presentations.
