Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so it's time to start thinking about a new restaurant to try for dinner, a trendy drink spot to gather with friends, gifts for that special someone and most importantly, what to wear. Red is always my go-to color choice for this occasion and I am especially excited about it this year, because it's going beyond holiday and is a huge color trend.
Top fashion labels have featured red in their 2017 spring/summer ready-to-wear collections and I am seeing more retailers featuring it in their apparel and accessory inventory.
Red can sometimes be very intimidating for people. I often hear “it doesn't work well with my skin tone, I can't pull off that color or I will never get my wear out of it.” While all of these concerns are valid, I have put together five simple ways to bring red into your everyday style with on-trend, subtle pieces that can be worn through multiple seasons.
1. The Crossbody, J.Crew, Lehigh Valley Mall
Why I love it:
Smaller bags in a bold color bring just the right amount of attention to your outfit without taking away from it or making it too busy, so you can wear it all of the time, whether you are in the office or running errands. I love the color blocking on this bag from J.Crew , and it can be customized!
Style Tip:
Wear it across your body during the day but over your shoulder during the evening for a more sophisticated look.
2. The Bomber, Macy's, Lehigh Valley Mall
Why I love it:
A red bomber is a season-less jacket because it can be worn in warmer temperatures and you can use it to layer in cooler temperatures. Opt for one that is a bit structured and a softer material like this one by Lauren Ralph Lauren. It can be worn with any type of jean, a casual or work dress or a long maxi skirt.
Style Tip:
Avoid red jackets in shiny fabrics; they aren't as timeless.
3. The Statement Glasses, Nordstrom Rack, Allentown
Why I love it:
Having a red pair of sunglasses is the perfect addition to your eyewear collection. It's an easy and unexpected way to incorporate this vibrant color into your style. Opt for a pair that is a bit more squared, such as these Ferragamos (under $100).
Style Tip:
Avoid red lenses, they aren't practical and can be overpowering. Stick to red just on the frames or wires.
4. The Block Heel, DSW, Allentown
Why I love it:
Comfort with a little bit of height! A red heel isn't considered just a “night-out shoe” anymore because of the various fabrics and styles designers have introduced. A suede block heel like these by Chinese Laundry are perfect—they keep your look feminine while adding just the right amount of height for comfort.
Style Tip:
Wear them with a skinny jean (cuffing optional) and an oversized sweater, or a just-below-the-knee knife pleat skirt and tee.
5. The Baseball Hat, Forever 21, Lehigh Valley Mall
Why I love it:
A red baseball cap keeps your look effortless, casual and fun. They are also extremely versatile; I throw mine on before heading to the gym when I have no make-up on and my hair isn't done. They are also compactible for traveling and to wear outdoors for skin protection.
Style Tip:
Wear it with a leather moto jacket, or a long wool coat and sneakers.
