When It Comes To Great Skin, What’s Your Beauty IQ?
By: Style, Lehigh Valley Style November 2013, Lehigh Valley Style, Style Picks

My makeup looks great indoors, but sometimes looks too harsh outside. What can I do?

Makeup can look completely different exposed to different levels and types of light. Try to apply your makeup in the brightest light it will be exposed to. Best bet is to apply makeup in bright, natural light, facing a window so that the light reflects on your face.

Should I use a lighted makeup mirror to apply makeup?

The light you use when making up should be as close as possible to the light in which you are going to be seen. There are many mirrors on the market with bulbs that stimulate various lighting condition. It's not necessary to use a lighted makeup mirror. Bright, natural light is always best for daytime makeup.

My skin is dry. Should I use a lotion I can rinse or a cream-based cleanser? How often?

Dry skin can be cleaned twice daily with a non-soap cleansing bar, a rinse able lotion formulated for dry skin or a cleansing cream. Toiletry soap tends to be drying, so it is not recommended. Work up a lather using very gentle circular motions with your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly to hydrate your skin. Cleansing creams are particularly good for thoroughly removing makeup. If your skin is very dry and sensitive, the wood fibers in the tissues used to remove cleansing cream may irritate your skin. If so, try wiping your cleansing cream off with a soft, lukewarm cloth. If you have very dry skin, try using a towel and apply a moisturizer.

What is the most effective way to clean normal skin?

For normal skin, avoid extreme products that are either drying or oil prone. Wash your face in the morning and before bed with either a soap-based or a non-soap cleanser. Using gentle, circular motions, work up a lather with your fingertips or a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry and apply a light moisturizer.

I have oily skin, how can I best cleanse it?

For oily skin, cleanse two or three times daily using a bar or lotion cleanser formulated for oily skin, avoid oil-based cleansing creams. Use a soft cloth of your fingertips to work up a lather. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of product and towel dry. Following cleansing, moisten a quilted cotton pad with a toner or astringent. If skin is very oily, use a toner or astringent as needed during the day to control excess oil.
