If you only attend one art event this year, treat yourself to Impossibly Real: The Art of Peter Maier. This is a very special one-day exhibit held on April 13 from 4-8 p.m. in the Baker Arts Center at Muhlenberg College. The one-man show will benefit Equi-librium Therapeutic Horsemanship’s riding and driving programs.
Photorealism often inspires awe in art fans and artists alike. However, Maier’s art has an intoxicating effect on viewers that is exceptional even in the lofty realms of realist painting. This is due to his singular skill as a painter and the fascinating, unorthodox appropriation of materials and techniques. Remarkably, he reinvigorates realism by deftly engaging contemporary tools to illuminate the essence of his subjects. Maier is consistently producing spectacles that reach from his inner world into each of ours.
Concerning his work, he says, “My art is in a constant state of transition and transformation. The subjects, whether human, animal or inanimate, are presented as a single subject in a frontal or side view manner—usually in a life-size or larger-than-life format.”
He creates a unique drama and intense focus by executing each image on a pure black or white fabricated aluminum panel without a background. He only uses eight colors and no premixing is involved. He applies multiple layers and builds a transparency among them that seduces and startles the eyes. One almost waits in anticipation for the painted subject to breathe as it boldly enters the awakened world.
Ticket prices are $25/pp, $40/couple or $10 with student ID. Call 610.417.2791 for more information. To register, send check to Equi-librium, 524 Fehr Rd., Nazareth, PA 18064. Pre-registrations will be entered into a drawing for a free giclée.
