Of course, a well-coiffed pooch should also be a well-mannered pooch, and that’s why owner Lisa McDonald and her team at Leader of the Pack also offer a variety of training classes. “My training philosophy is based on the balanced approach,” McDonald says. “We believe in strengthening the bond between dog and human using dog psychology.” The key, McDonald says, is establishing the pack hierarchy. “This is not done through intimidation or aversive techniques but rather by controlling the dog’s resources.” As you might expect, McDonald has a pack of her own: six Rottweilers and a Chihuahua. Take a wild guess who thinks he’s the leader of that canine clique. “Yes, Buddy, my Chihuahua, must be reminded on a regular basis he is not a Rottweiler,” McDonald says.

Getting inked can be a deeply personal decision for the one on the receiving end of the needle; it’s something Karin and Chris Vangeli see every day in their line of work. “We meet survivors of war, cancer and great loss in their lives, as well as those who celebrate victories, family and love,” Karin says. The Vangelis’ decision to open Amaryllis Tattoo in January of 2013 was prompted by a profound heartache of their own: the loss of Karin’s mother. “As is often the case when someone passes away, you re-examine your life and what’s really important,” she says. What was important to the couple was having a tattoo shop of their own. Not just any location would do; they wanted to set up shop in Palmer Township, where they both grew up and still live today. At the time, Karin had spent more than two decades in banking, and Chris was on his tenth year of work at a local tattoo parlor. Their joint venture would combine her marketing and customer service skills with his ink artistry. The leap of faith proved to be the right choice. “People took a chance on us based on our promises and we believe we have kept those promises,” Karin says.
