The staff at Allentown’s Phoebe Floral are interpreters, of sorts—they bring a feeling, emotion or sentiment to life in floral form. “We can help people express things like sympathy, affection or appreciation in a way that they might find difficult to express in words,” says Jack Robinson, who owns the shop with his wife, Missy. They bought the business in 2005, but Phoebe’s roots run much deeper than that. “Horace McCready was the founder almost 75 years ago, and after his retirement he sold it to his bookkeeper, Gary Wagner,” explains Robinson. Wagner moved the business from the Phoebe Home to its current location on West Hamilton Street in 1988. When the Robinsons took over, they say they were dedicated to maintaining Phoebe’s tradition of excellence, and that has included filling some tall orders over the years. “We have received many unusual requests in the past, often for funeral pieces that are unique to the individuals being honored,” Robinson says. “We have created easel sprays of horse heads, officer badges and slot machines. If you can imagine it, our team can create it.”
