to
Museum of Indian Culture 2825 Fish Hatchery Road, Allentown, Pennsylvania 18103
Discover the vibrant world of American Indian dance at Let’s Powwow! Native American Dance Regalia, Customs, and Tradition, a new exhibit at the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown opening on Sunday, April 12, 2015, and running until Sunday, September 6, 2015. The exhibit explores the history of American Indian powwows and social dancing through the display of handmade dance clothing, or regalia, made by tribal dancers from throughout North America.
Visitors can trace the history of American Indian dance regalia—one of the most under appreciated art forms in America. Discover how trade and culture change has transformed this clothing over the past 200 years, and learn the importance of the powwow and how dance and dance regalia continue to help preserve tradition, foster innovation, and bring American Indian families together today. Visitors can also learn about the intensity of today’s American Indian competition dancing.
The history of the powwow and dance is presented through handmade items, including a Seneca men’s traditional fully beaded regalia, Cheyenne Men’s Fancy Dance regalia with U.S. Marine Corp design, Oneida Smoke Dance regalia, Grass Dance regalia, a Jingle Dress, and much more. The exhibit also features a powwow drum owned by Bart Cartwright, Delaware.
Museum hours are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children 12-17, and children under 12 are free.
