Gallery talk with el otro lado del alma curator Moritz Neumüller
to
LUAG (Lehigh University Art Galleries) 420 E. Packer Avenue, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18015
Obscure rituals, sacred objects, secret societies—enter the world of Santería, an Afro-Cuban religion that has emerged from the melding of African Spirituality, Spanish Catholicism, and beliefs of Cuba’s native inhabitants. In this exhibition, photography reveals the ‘syncretisms’ of this religion: the combining of seemingly contradictory beliefs. As well as being the first comprehensive exhibition to showcase the influence of Afro-Cuban spirituality in photography and video art, the exhibition also explores the development of photographic traditions within Cuba, from photojournalism to contemporary art.
