We’re making stone soup and you’re invited! As the legend goes, three weary and hungry soldiers entered a village. Due to a poor harvest, the villagers hid what little food they had. The soldiers responded by offering to share their “secret” recipe for stone soup. They dropped three stones into a kettle and exclaimed how wonderful it would taste with a pinch of salt and a sprig of parsley. One of the villagers knew exactly where to find these items and returned with both ingredients, plus a turnip. As the soup began to boil, other villagers joined in and soon the kettle was full of beef, barley, carrots and other vegetables.
Stone soup is unique every time and you can help us make our own version. Bring along an ingredient of your own to add to our kettle. While you walk on a trail along the Monocacy Creek, the soup will cook. After the walk, sit and enjoy the warm soup with your fellow walkers. Our walk will take you from Monocacy Park to the historic 1748 Burnside Plantation. The tree-lined trail is flat and easy. The plantation offers historical walks on its grounds.
Sturdy footwear is recommended. The walk is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring binoculars and/or a camera for wildlife observation.
Registration: Space is limited. Register at lvhn.org/getoutlv for this walk or any Get Out! Lehigh Valley event, or call 610-402-CARE.
