A pioneer supporter of ‘outsider’ art, NAEMI develops projects, conferences, workshops and activities with experts in the visual arts, literature, and mental health. The organization was founded by Juan Martin while he was working as a counselor for the mentally ill and advising his patients to use art as therapy. He established NAEMI in 1988 as an organization dedicated to collecting, displaying and selling art by persons in recovery from mental illness. Most of the twelve artists featured in this exhibition have no formal art training and experience some form of mental or emotional impairment.
