January 31–March 24
Kicking off at the end of this month, The Alternative Gallery's American Refugee display is a relevant and touching experience that sheds a light on the very current topic of immigration and migration that the world is grappling with. In-house curators sought work from talented international contacts as well as seasoned local artists that have a strong voice. The exhibit explores the stunning creations of more than 20 different Latin and South American artists from across 12 nations, such as Uruguay, Colombia and El Salvador through traditional, modern and political art. An expanse of mediums will be represented beyond the customary forms of visual art to include unique forms of expression, such as photojournalism and art installations. Accompanying the art pieces, the display promises to engage the senses through traditional folk music and food. The immersive experience focuses on the recent history of the world, and zooms in to look at the mass-migration crisis taking place on the American continent, south of the U.S. border. While the crisis has existed for decades, American Refugee aims to draw more attention to the dire circumstances, give people a deeper understanding of the situation and enlighten Americans on the importance of providing asylum for others.
