When you lived at home, your parents had the ultimate say on your décor, and when you live with someone else, you will most likely need their approval on it as well. But when you are the queen or king of your very own castle, you can make your place as funky, classic or uniquely you as you'd like—without having someone tell you otherwise.
Paint
No one, except maybe your landlord, can dictate what colors belong on your walls, which gives you the right to splash all kinds of shades on them. While your previous significant other may have hated yellow or considered blush too feminine for a living room, you do not. When living on your own, you get to decide and should be excited to paint each wall of your place a different shade of purple or orange, if that's what your heart desires.
Wall Art
Gentlemen, this may be the only time in your life where no one can tell you that a scoreboard as large as your TV doesn't belong in the living room. Likewise, ladies, this is the time in your life where you can hang all your “drink and draw” masterpieces in order to remind you of those amazing ladies' nights. There may never be a better time to get an oversized print of your favorite painting, movie poster, athlete, etc. and use it as a statement piece for a room. Take advantage of the creative liberties you are being afforded.
Furniture
Spoil yourself with the red couch you have always dreamed of, or get a king size bed all to yourself. Even the big statement pieces of your home are completely up to you. If ever you have dreamed of having a Japanese dining table, buy the table and enjoy all your meals while sitting on the floor.
Allusions
Make your space a reflection of yourself and all the things you love. Hang a blue French horn in your kitchen, get a mini replica of the iron throne and put it on the side tables in your living room. Dress up a mannequin in a floor-length black dress with pearls. Whatever you obsess over deserves, at the very least, a wink of recognition in the place you call home.
