With the frigid winter weather upon us, there's nothing better than cozying up to a warm fireplace. But fireplaces can be dangerous if not taken care of properly. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe and warm through the season.
Keep it Clean
If you haven't had a certified professional come to clean your chimney this year, now is the time to do it. Before you light the flame, be sure to have your fireplace inspected and cleaned.
Remember that the area closest to the flame will become hot, so be sure to keep it clean and clear of any belongings.
Use Your Fireplace Properly
Leave the glass doors open to ventilate your fire and prevent creosote from building up in your chimney.
Keep your fireplace's metal mesh screen closed to block any embers that might pop out.
Use the Right Wood
Use only wood and matches, not flammable liquids, to start your fire.
Build your fire using only seasoned hardwood, not cardboard, trash or moist wood. Moist wood will accelerate creosote buildup in your chimney.
Soak hot ashes in water and put in a metal container outside of your home after you've extinguished your fire.
Prepare Your Home
Make sure your smoke detectors have working batteries, are in working condition and are on every level of your home.
Keep your stack of wood at least 30 feet from your home, and check that the outside of your chimney is clear of branches, leaves and other debris.
