Ho-Hum!

Now that the holidays have ended, the frosty winter months seem to drag on. While some people revel in cold weather for its recreational opportunities and fireside activities, many find the lack of sunshine and warmth challenging to their mood. It's easy to start feeling depressed and sluggish when the cold weather seems endless. If this sounds like you, we have some helpful tips that may help ward of the winter blues.

Light Therapy

Miss the feeling of the sun shining on your face? A Light Therapy Box mimics outside light so it can really help lift your spirits on a dreary day. All it takes is 30 minutes a day, preferably in the morning. A bestseller in this category, Lightphoria 10,000 LUX Energy Light Lamp, which includes numerous features for users, is available on amazon.com. There are also alarm clocks available that instead of waking you up with an obnoxious sound, gently wake you the way the sunrise would, by simulating dawn. One of the top rated dawn simulators is the Philips HF3520 Wake-Up Light With Colored Sunrise Simulation. Make sure to buy one that uses full-spectrum light.

Spend Some Time Outdoors

Though the weather may be less than delightful, it's helpful to take in some natural light at least once a day. Make sure to bundle up first, and then go out for a simple walk around the block. If you have a dog, bring your furry friend along with you for a relaxing stroll. Looking for a great local trail? There are some great locations throughout the Lehigh Valley such as Jacobsburg State Park in Wind Gap, Monocacy Park in Bethlehem or Trexler Park in Allentown.

Exercise

Being active is important for our physical health, but you may not know the benefit that working out has on your mental health. When you exercise your body produces endorphins and reduces stress hormones. Spice things up by trying out a new workout class such as kickboxing or hot yoga. There are some excellent new workout spots that have opened up in the Valley such as the AntiGravity Yoga Lab in Emmaus or Title Boxing Club in Trexlertown. Not into classes? Try finding an exercise machine that is close to a window in the gym to get some extra sunlight.

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Let the natural sunlight shine in by opening more shades and curtains in your home. Move your chairs or desk closer to the window so that you have the sun on you while you're working or reading a good book. Also, if you have large windows in your bedroom consider leaving the curtains open at night so the sun wakes you up in the morning.

Socialize with Friends and Family

Unless you're stuck inside because of a snowstorm, there's no reason to lock yourself indoors all winter long. Make weekly plans to go out with your friends. Schedule a dinner and a movie date, or see if there are some local shows going on in the area. With all the great events going on in Allentown at the PPL Center and new restaurants such as The Dime opening in Allentown, you're guaranteed a good time. Even if it's just a cup of coffee, the social interaction will leave you feeling much better. If you're feeling like staying in, plan to watch a movie or play a board game with family.

Plan a Vacation

It's never too early to start planning the perfect vacation getaway. This way you have something bright to look forward to once summer finally comes. If you have the funds after the holidays are over, maybe take a winter vacation to get you out of your cold weather slump. Pick a place that's warm and the sun is shining all year long.

See a Doctor

If despite your best efforts you are still feeling depressed and isolated, it may be time to go see a doctor. Sometimes Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) cannot be self-treated. Your doctor may see if you are a candidate for a prescription-based therapy.
