Michelle Obama’s Bangs Influence Style Trends in the LV
By: Notes From the Style Desk, Beauty, Lehigh Valley Style February 2013

First Lady Michelle Obama's new haircut nearly stole the Inauguration spotlight—even the President said so. From CNN to BuzzFeed, her stylish bangs have garnered reactions and speculation about what a haircut can tell us about the president's second term. And with 70 million Google search results to their credit, Mrs. Obama's new bangs even launched a Twitter handle (@michellesbangs).

It's no secret the First Lady is a style icon. Her choices, from shoes, jewelry and designers, make their way into the headlines almost as much—and sometimes more—than her husband's White House pronouncements.

However, her new haircut has women all over the world rushing to their hairstylist for this latest look. The Lehigh Valley is no exception to this phenomenon. Stylists and salons report more than a few clients are looking to get their own “Obama Bangs.” Why wouldn't they? The straight across fringe is a timeless classic, and it can be great option for a variety of face shapes and hairstyles.

But the First Lady's new style also offers a modern twist that makes it current and fashionable: her fringe is textured through the ends, shorter above the center brow and longer at the corner of her eyes. This gives a typically blunt cut a softer, piece-y edge. In some circles, the look is said to have even subtracted a few years from Mrs. Obama's already youthful look.

The beauty of this style is that it allows for a complete new look without having to change the entire haircut. Face-framing fringe showcases the eyes and creates the appearance of a more balanced face shape. It works best with straight or wavy hair, but those with thicker or curlier hair can pull it off with a little help from a flat iron.

If it's a new style you are looking for without a huge commitment to your overall haircut, like the First Lady, a new fringe is perfect for you. At J.Morgan Salon and Home in Easton, we've already done a few of these cuts since the inauguration. Our stylists have been busy consulting with clients who are eager to adopt the First Lady's latest style trend, as well as providing a few additional insights into other hair trends coming on the scene in 2013.
