New Home Kitchen up to $50k

Stofanak Custom Cabinetry

Love at first sight was the theme of this Craftsman-style kitchen built into a new home. The clients fell in love with the first display they happened upon at Stofanak Custom Cabinetry. It was a display of American Craftsman style, circa 1900 to 1930 and it was precisely the simplicity and careful detail of handcrafted furniture that the clients had envisioned for their new kitchen. Also referred to as Arts and Crafts or Mission style, its clean lines incorporate well into contemporary home designs.

An integrated wood-front dishwasher acts as a warm balance to the stainless steel refrigerator, wall ovens and gas cooktop designed into the L-shaped work area. Contemporary conveniences unavailable during the Craftsman period include a pot-filler faucet over the cook top, a two-level island with a second sink, trash roll-out, and a counter-height snack bar with additional storage, as well as pot and pan drawers, a corner Lazy Susan and drawer dividers. More storage and charm was created in the room by adding on to the island with a walnut countertop, a series of decorative shelves and several apothecary drawers. There is a matching butler's pantry to accommodate the adjoining dining room.

Fine details such as hammered copper sinks and cabinet hardware, along with a backsplash of tumbled stone contribute to the overall cohesion of the design. Dark granite countertops contrast the light warm wood tones. Simple frame doors with reverse center panels and slab drawers are inset into the cabinet frames, while high wall cabinet doors have horizontal double panels and the cabinet ends are finished with matching detail. White oak in a warm-toned color is accented with natural walnut pegs in the corners of the doors—just another example of the level of detail that was introduced to the design. Prairie-style mullion doors with seeded glass in the hood and butler's pantry wall cabinets offer a contrasting point of visual interest that draws attention without being overbearing.

Appropriately styled windows, doors and lighting were specified and act as contributors to the overall appeal of this well-planned kitchen. Although contained in a new home, it conveys the credibility in craftsmanship of a former time.
