Have you seen the video with the guy burning the hair? You probably have, and like me, you probably had someone else tell you about it, too. What started with the innocent Ombré Hair color has grown into new looks that we've never seen before. Ombré was new and different but not too different. Next came hair painting, then hair being colored (fluid color) on tables, then hair color that looked computerized (pixelated color), then unnatural colors like blue, purple, pink and green. Now, people are looking for new ways to express their style.

Today, seeing a mom in the Lehigh Valley with blue or purple hair doesn't mean she's a hairdresser. The thing about these new trends is it's not top down trends; it's bottom/youth driven ideas. Unnatural hair color is an individual personal expression, and it no longer means that you can't hold positions of power or are limited in job or income, because it's almost considered “normal” to have pink hair. Year 2014 was about transition and 2015 was the year we stopped looking back.

So for 2016, why be ordinary? Anna Wintour once said, “Beauty is always fashionable, but fashion isn't always beautiful.” For 2016, here are some ideas to make sure you are both beautiful and fashionable.

Hair

Style your hair with brushes, wands and hands—Texture gets stronger. Flat irons are no longer a daily ritual—too straight is so 2015.

Second day hair is the new dirty little secret, and bedhead is the new straight. Try dry shampoos and dry conditioners by ARROJO to maintain this look.

Don't be afraid to cut your hair. From Adele, Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Lawrence and Dakota Johnson's tasseled LOB's to Alyssa Milano and Lauren Cohan's new short haircut, it doesn't have to be short but long hair with split ends are out.

Play with color. If you are sitting with all of your friends and everyone has the same cut or color, then that was a different decade and it's time for a new look.

Make Up

Lauren Bennett from Lauren's Makeup Designs, Lehigh Valley Style Best of The Valley 2014 Winner, has these tips to update your look.

Eyes

Smoky and cat eyes aren't going anywhere any time soon, but for 2016, they take a more subtle approach that draws all the attention to the shape of your eyes.

Adding a touch of glitter to your lids or inner corner is a great way to add a POP to your new look!

Lips

Bold and beautiful lips like classic reds and neutrals are go-to lips. Longwearing liquid lipsticks and lip-glosses are all the rage for 2016.

Kiss the Kylie Jenner lip challenge goodbye; 2016 is about embracing what you've got by using a neutral liner and topping with some sheer gloss.

Face

A gorgeous and healthy glow is another trend for the new year. Instead of harsh contour, give your skin a soft sheen and add a light pink or neutral blush to your cheeks. Pat a little gold highlighter on the high points of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose.

Beauty for 2016 is about personal voices and making statements, not fitting in because you like the trend. The trend for 2016 is to look like YOU, which is what most hairdressers, makeup artists and stylists have always hoped for their guests. Now, being and looking like you is trendy in a new, even more personal and remarkable way. Happy 2016!
