This summer, it's got to be all about the P-O-C—Pop of Color, that is. Not just a trend to follow in clothing and accessories, your hair can also be a way to add that unexpected pop. Whether you opt for just a subtle streak or two, or a more powerful palette, showing off your POC personality is a trend not for the tame of manes.
Choosing the POC for You
There are a couple of possibilities for POCs: all over color (like Katy Perry's striking Smurf blue) or subtle streaks (think the pink streaks of January Jones). Each look offers a distinctive look, though we suspect an all over hue won't be the easiest to rock at the office.
Crazy colors might work for a pop star but you can still join the POC movement with warmer tones that are less vivid. Rose gold hues (a great ideas for blondes and light brunettes) have been a staple on the runways recently, and rich, fiery reds are always a pretty POC possibility. Either way, an appointment with a professional colorist is a must—don't try this at home!
Maintaining Your POC
A great benefit to POC streaks is that it doesn't require the high level of salon maintenance as other coloring methods do, but it is still important to take care of your new hue. Use shampoos and conditioners that are made specifically for color-treated hair so the color won't fade as quickly (try Garnier Fructis Color Shield Shampoo & Conditioner, $4 each, Target). Also consider using a conditioning hair masque to preserve vibrancy (try Matrix Biolage Color Bloom Masque, visit matrix.com for local salons).
POC for the Less Adventurous
If you love the POC look, but aren't willing to make the commitment that semi-permanent hair color requires there is another option. Colorful hair clip-ins is a non-committal, affordable way to dabble with this trend whenever the mood strikes you (try Sally Beauty Hi-Lite Clip-in Synthetic Hair Extensions, $4.50, sallybeauty.com). That way you can coordinate your POC with your outfit and occasion!
