As a wedding guest, the easiest way to choose what to wear is by the season. However, there are some rules that need to be considered first. When choosing colors, white is off-limits and reserved for the bride only. Avoid wearing white to activities before the wedding as well such as the engagement party, bridal shower and rehearsal dinner. Although it used to be taboo to wear black to weddings, little black dresses are appropriate for evening ceremonies. Lastly, it's always best to be overdressed than underdressed.
Casual vs. Formal
Although “casual dress” sounds like anything goes, refrain from wearing jeans, shorts, tank tops, flip-flops and destressed clothes. The best bet for picking out an outfit is based on the location and whether the wedding is inside or outside. Try to think of outfits that are business casual or something that could be worn to work. A knee-length dress with wedges or flats for women, and slacks and a sports coat for men, are safe options to consider.
For formal weddings, think of cocktail dresses and long gowns paired with statement heels, jewelry or clutches for women. For men, think a black tuxedo or evening jacket with matching trousers.
Winter Weddings
Rich-colored dresses like emerald green, ruby and royal blue are perfect for winter weddings and look great with almost every skin tone. Shorter dresses can be worn when paired with opaque black tights and closed-toe pumps. Black and grey are classic choices for men, as well as a trim-fit wool suit, which can be ideal for any season.
Spring Weddings
Prepare for the unexpected when dressing for spring weddings, especially if it is outside. Spring showers can cause heels to sink into the grass and long dresses to drag on the ground. Opt for shorter dresses and more practical shoes. Spring weddings are also great for floral patterns for women and colorful styles for both women and men. Men can wear colorful shirts or ties to make their black, grey or navy suits pop.
Summer Weddings
Wearing light and airy fabrics to keep cool is key to summer weddings. Silk, chiffon, cotton and linen are very breathable materials to fight the heat. Vibrant colored dresses and fun patterns will make a statement. For men, it's acceptable to ditch the tie and where a loose button-down, but make sure to wear the jacket. Light beige or grey colored suits are perfect for summer, and hints of color are also welcome.
Fall Weddings
Due to unpredictable fall weather, it is best to plan for both warm and cool temperature. For women, choose a dress that looks good with or without tights. Go with more muted fall colors and add a brighter color with a scarf, heels or lipstick. Men can mix and match textures for a cozy look while also keeping it classy.
