From Trash to Treasure: Repurpose, Redecorate the Right Way
By: Lehigh Valley Style, Homes, Lehigh Valley Style April 2012, Web Extras

In this month's issue, we breathed new life into some found objects that served as the perfect vessel for our mini herb garden projects, repurposing and redecorating with an eco-friendly, stylish touch. In keeping with our trash to treasure DIY projects, we decided to explore some other ways you can turn unused objects into functional décor pieces for your home.

Idea 1: Inexpensive Art

Honor your old hometown or your native Valley roots by turning maps into wall art. Use the map as a whole or carefully cut to your desired shape, mat with a complementary color border and frame. The only “new” component to the project is the border, which can be found at your local craft store; unused frames lying around the house or inexpensive flea market finds are a perfect way to give your map art a vintage feel. In this world of GPS and Smartphones, isn't it time we honor the navigational tools of decades past?

Idea 2: Stylish Storage

If you have an old dresser that's past its prime and just can't seem to find a place in your home there's no need to throw it away. If the drawers are in good shape but the frame has got to go try using the drawers to create a unique decorative bookcase. Start by removing the drawer pulls and filling in the screw holes with wood filler, then sand smooth before painting with a layer of primer. Paint a fresh color, then line the inside with decorative wallpaper or contact paper. Use drywall screws to anchor your new shelves to the wall.

Idea 3: Can Glam

You know all those sturdy cardboard canisters from your instant oatmeal and cocoa powder you feel guilty throwing away? Covering the outside with wrapping paper can turn these containers into stylish gift holders (for everything from homemade cookies to socks) or countertop storage for kitchen odds and ends (from flour to utensils). Be sure to measure and cut paper carefully!
