Hello everyone! As Style's newest editorial intern, I've been keeping myself very busy the past few days getting used to my new surroundings and responsibilities. Even with two semesters' experience working as a web content writer/editor at the University Relations office at my college, Kutztown University, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous driving in on my first day this past Wednesday morning. Since choosing my major in Professional Writing more than two years ago, Lehigh Valley Style has been my number one “dream job” after graduation, and I couldn't be more excited that it's actually happening, even though I'm only interning!
Thankfully, it turned out that I had no reason to be nervous, because I was instantly greeted with warm, smiling faces and an energetic willingness to help from Meghan Decker. I was promptly introduced to my workspace, a cute little cubicle with a computer, phone and a hanging poster of the August 2011 cover. I was starting to feel like an actual adult.
Meghan spent the next two hours giving me the run down of how the magazine works, the sections I would be responsible for and assignments to get started on right away. It wasn't long before I was making lists and researching material. One of the best parts of this internship, I was told, is that I'll be able to leave the office and venture out to meet with and interview the small business owners that I'll be writing about. How cool is that?
My very first assignment couldn't have been a better fit. For the upcoming August issue, LVS is featuring an equestrian article, and having grown up riding, competing and currently owning seven of my own horses, I dove right in. My job was to come up with 20 or so commonly used equestrian terms and definitions, and while it might not have been the largest contribution, I was thankful to be a part of the feature at all, especially with something that has been a passion and lifestyle of mine for more than 15 years.
I can already tell that LVS is a good fit for me, as the end of my first week is closing in and each day absolutely flies by. Keep an eye out for my next post, and have a great Memorial Day weekend!
