Being away at college for the past four years, my mother sends me packages that remind me of my hometown, Bethlehem, and to let me know that she's thinking about me even though I'm more than 600 miles away at Michigan State. A typical care package consists of chocolate from Josh Early Candies, a decoration for my room (usually candles or pictures), a hidden treasure that is always a $20 bill, a heartfelt homemade card and, of course, a copy of Lehigh Valley Style magazine. Being a loyal reader of the magazine, when it came time for me to start searching for a summer internship. Well, the answer was simply mailed to me monthly.
After a nerve-racking phone interview and an email almost a month later, I found out that I would be interning for LVS. My first day of the internship I sat down with Pam Deller, the publisher, and talked about dates that I should have on my calendar for the summer events coming up. As many of you know, the “Style Scene” section of the magazine is very popular and I would be helping to record the names of the Valley's finest who pose in front of the “Style wall,” as we call it here.
With the Youth's Playwright Festival scheduled for May 19, Pam soon realized that she would be away on business that weekend which meant that the new photography intern, Chelsi and I would be working this event all on our own! We both listened carefully about how to put up the Style wall, the proper way to take names and other useful instructions while nodding our heads with a smile on our faces, more excited than fearful.
The day of the Festival, Chelsi and I met in front of the red carpet and set up. Soon, people came strutting down and mostly everyone was happy to stop and have their “moment” in front of the wall. The hour went by so rapidly and before I knew it we were taking down the wall and making our way to our cars with a great partnership forming. We looked at each other and said, “Piece of cake. When can we do this again?”
So, now I sit here writing about my first LVS experience eager for another opportunity. I'm thrilled to go back to the office tomorrow, anticipating even better things to come and hopefully an excellent review!
