Well Style readers, I can happily write that I met my deadlines this week! There were certainly many obstacles that I had to overcome though before I crossed that finish line. The old phrase, “less is more” definitely came into play while I was writing these articles for the Life in the Valley section of the magazine.
When I was an English major during my undergraduate career, I was always being assigned lengthy papers. This caused me to get into the habit of becoming a very detailed writer who likes to create long, elaborate sentences. This is not technically a bad thing, but I learned that it can cause my issues when I have a 100-150 word limit on a piece I'm writing. It has been challenging trying to squeeze everything I want to say in only 150 words. Though the more I'm studying past articles of the magazine, I'm slowly starting to learn the tricks of the trade. Practice makes perfect, so I know that the more I write the better I will become!
Other challenges I encountered this past week range from phone tag games to hunting down the perfect image to fit with an article. I always prefer a challenge rather than taking the easy way out. If all the information came to me with a snap of my fingers how fun would that be? It's rewarding to get all the information, put the article together, and then finally hit the send button and get the final product off to Lisa to get reviewed. I'm now going to allow myself a 30-second dance party, and then get working on the next projects coming up!
