As an avid reader of everything from books to magazines to blogs, I find it's easy not to even realize the hard work that goes into the creative writing process. If I can sum up what I've learned so far at LVS in one sentence it would be this: It's not as easy as it looks! Now that I'm on the other side of things, I get to see the magazine world from a completely different perspective. While it looks like articles just come to us naturally, it actually takes a lot of brainstorming, planning, researching and editing until we reach the finished product.
Like I wrote in my last blog post, it's important to find an outlet from the office. Last night was our monthly Style Insider Happy Hour at the Sands, which was the perfect way for me to get out of the work environment and into the community. Meeting so many readers, local business owners and coworkers reminded me why I want to get into magazine writing—because of the amazing connections, the variety of content and the challenge of always coming up with something new, exciting and interesting for the readers to enjoy.
I also got to meet the other editorial intern, Daisy Willis. Though our paths never cross in the office because we intern on opposite days, it was nice to finally connect and bond over our experiences! As writers, it was a great opportunity to get to meet people who read our magazine and appreciate what we do.
What I've learned here so far is to be patient, persistent and thorough, and that the end result will always be worth the hard work. I've always loved the quote, “Nothing in life worth having comes easily,” which is completely true and applicable to so many situations, especially the workplace. As I continue to write for LVS, I know I can be sure of one thing—it will be a fun and rewarding experience! Check back soon!
