As Allentown Appliance celebrates its 30th year of success, explain to us how the concept for Counter Culture came about. We started with selling small appliances and Riedel glassware at our main store, Allentown Appliance. I believe the first brand was the Wolf Gourmet line. We then acquired the Smeg line of appliances. They were selling very well at the main location, so we decided to give them their own platform.
Tell us about the value of being a family-owned business. Consistency—the personal relationships you can make with customers and vendors.
Is there a certain product that continuously flies off the shelves? Our Peugeot whiskey glasses are a huge hit with our customers! We also do really well with all the Smeg products. Smeg is an Italian brand and has a retro '50s look to it. They carry a full line of small appliances, including toasters, mixers, blenders, juicers and espresso machines. They come in a variety of colors—red, blue, pastel green, pink, cream and black.
Explain the range of price and budget options available at the store. Everything from $10 to $500!
What are some fun products that shoppers may not know you carry? We have thermal wine bags, exclusive Peugeot whiskey glasses, Riedel wine glasses and decanters, beer tasting sets and beer flights, Peugeot salt and pepper grinders, and assortments of coffee and tea!
Tell us a little bit about the in-store events that Counter Culture hosts. We hold monthly events to showcase certain products. We've done pasta-making with Smeg mixers, a cosmo and martini event and holiday shopping events. In December, we held a gingerbread waffle-making event. We've also done beer tastings with HiJinx Brewery, Blendtec blender drinks and smoothies.
