Taking Stock So Far
By: Life of a Style Intern, Lehigh Valley Style September 2012

After my first week interning here at LVS, things have slowed down a little. I came in my first day to an inbox bursting with assignments, and while this was an exciting way to start out, I now have a chance to catch my breath and take stock of my adventure so far. One thing I really appreciate and that I knew I would love about magazine writing is the opportunity to research and explore a range of new topics. As a nerdily enthusiastic life-long learner, I can think of nothing more gratifying than spending each workday delving into an unfamiliar subject.

First and most important to the mission of the magazine, it's great to see what exciting events and venues are available to the people of this bustling Valley. I have a friend who regularly complains about “Philly-goers,” people who reserve their social life for jaunts to Philadelphia. Sure, that's

fun once in a while, but it seems these Philly-goers might be overlooking what's right under their noses. I had a chance this week to speak to the owner of a new restaurant in Whitehall, Griddle 145, and it's really inspiring to find that small business owners are working to revive and support their local communities right in our midst, something that seems particularly brave in this economy. Let's do our part as customers to back them up!

Another thing or two I learned about in the past week is the stunning career of Harry Connick Jr., who will be featured in the December issue for working with the Pennsylvania Youth Theatre to put on his play The Happy Elf. I knew that he is a singer and blew up a fighter jet battling aliens in the movie Independence Day, but not much else. As it turns out, this incredibly talented guy is a huge supporter of the arts and a genuinely charitable citizen of the world. I can always use a renewed faith in humanity. Thanks, Harry!

What's next for this humble intern? Only time will tell. I look forward to more enlightening assignments in the weeks and months to come!
