The end of summer still means parties, vacations, picnics, fairs and more events that bring booze and foods that are high in sugar. These activities, albeit fun, can potentially derail all of the hard work you've put in since your New Year's resolution. Are you finishing off the summer with a vacation? Let the pros at Forward Thinking Fitness help you with some tips to stay in check while you're gone.
- Grocery shop when you get to your destination. If you can find some fresh vegetables and fruit to munch on, bottled water to drink and some other high protein snacks (like almonds), you'll be able to keep yourself away from the urge to splurge on big meals and bad foods when you're out to eat. Drinking water and having a higher protein intake is going to be crucial to help keep your belly satisfied. This will (most likely) lead to healthier choices when you're out to eat. Staying in a place with a kitchen? Do all the cooking yourself and save even more calories—and money!
- Get yourself a workout routine for your hotel room. If you have a trainer, ask them to write up a workout that doesn't require anything but your body. There's no reason to stress about getting a temporary gym membership and dealing with the hassle of being in a new environment. Staying in your room and going through a circuit workout is a great way to get in a quick calorie-burning session without spending too much time. All you need is about a half hour with a good mixture of movements and you're set for the day. Plus, you'll be walking around a lot as you are exploring. Here is our workout we wrote you for your hotel room. Enjoy it!
- Bring your multi-vitamins with you. It's difficult to have a healthy and balanced diet when you're on vacation. Chances are that you won't consume everything you need in a day to keep your body operating at its peak, so take a multi-vitamin to help fill the nutrient gaps that you may encounter when you are enjoying your time away.
- Get enough sleep. Traveling to potentially different time zones, walking around all day, taking care of the kids and planning out your days can be stressful on your body. If you can, get to bed early and let your body wake up naturally so that you're well rested for sight-seeing and enjoying your vacation to the max!
Bonus Tip! This may sound crazy, but hear us out on this one. Let's say you are someone that has been consistent with working out and eating healthy all year—and we mean CONSISTENT. Know what you should do on vacation to stay on track? Everything that you don't do at home. Don't workout. Don't eat healthy. Don't worry about calorie counting or making sure you have all of your supplements that you take at home daily. Do your body a favor and leave all of it at home. This is going to shock your system, allow you to truly enjoy yourself while you're gone and give your body the rejuvenation that it has been craving for quite some time.
Secret pro tip to this concept: Everything in moderation, but let yourself loosen up a bit and enjoy life while you're away from all of the stress and stuff that weighs you down back at home. Trust us—you'll thank us for this one.
