Bethlehem is called the Christmas City because it was founded on Christmas Eve in 1741 by Moravian settlers. There is always something exciting happening in Bethlehem, but during the holidays, our city is really magical. We have two European-style Christmas markets, luminaria night, a live advent calendar, romantic carriage rides and much more. Bethlehem honors its Moravian heritage with Christmas Vespers at the Central Moravian Church, tours of historic Moravian buildings and many other traditional Christmas activities.
Right in the heart of it all is Donegal Square. Since 1985, our store has been a fixture on Main Street in Historic Bethlehem. Together with McCarthy's Red Stag Pub and Whiskey Bar, we are the Lehigh Valley's Celtic destination. We also make for a very cozy destination; Donegal Square has a huge selection of traditional sweaters, scarves and knits, and McCarthy's Red Stag Pub makes the perfect Irish Coffee. We give you many ways to come in and warm up!
Each year, we welcome thousands of visitors to our store and pub. Some are locals who pop in after work looking for something special or to grab a bite to eat and a pint. Many visit us from across the country, coming to Bethlehem on college tour, for a wedding, business trip or family visit. We also get visitors from overseas, and those who have lived or spent time in Ireland and the British Isles are excited to find our pantry stocked with chocolates, biscuits and teas from “the auld sod.”
For many years, Donegal Square has brought our customers all the best from Ireland and the British Isles, no passport or plane ticket required. Our visitors often ask if we have anything that represents Bethlehem because they want something to remind them of their visit. One of the landmarks of our city is the Star of Bethlehem, which for more than 80 years has shone down from atop South Mountain. The Star motif features prominently throughout Bethlehem as the city's symbol.
