When hunger hits, we immediately want to reach for the most satisfying food in our pantry or fridge. Most often it's the saltiest or sweetest available and before you know it, one slice of cheese and one slice of ham turns into a whole charcuterie spread! So, when you're hungry and you know you have eaten a healthy meal already, and your next one is a few hours away, I always try a few things first.
How to Snack Now to Avoid Binge Eating Later
1. Hydrate and drink water! Sometimes it's not food that our body is craving but water. I like to add lemon or some mineral drops. Adding mineral drops to water gives it a smoother taste and helps it go down easier, plus you are adding vital minerals that the body always needs. I use trace mineral drops by Trace Minerals.
2. If water didn't cut it, I would recommend eating some healthy fats from avocados or nuts. When we are watching calories or our weight, we tend to avoid fats, but healthy fats are so important and also help us stay full. Have a few healthy nuts like almonds, cashews or pecans. Brazil nuts are a personal favorite of mine. Two Brazil nuts give you a daily serving of selenium, which is a powerful antioxidant that also boosts your immune system. A spoonful of nut butter with a small piece of dark chocolate can also help satisfy hunger and sweet cravings.
3. Depending on the time of day, coffee! Plain black coffee with MCT oil (another healthy oil from coconuts) and collagen. Zero sugar! If black coffee isn't your thing, add 1 Tablespoon of grass-fed unsalted butter and blend in a blender. You'll get a latte looking delicious cup of coffee. The collagen adds amino acids and protein with very few calories. This keto-friendly coffee will not only curb your appetite but give you a boost in energy.
4. Drink a smoothie. Smoothies provide fiber from the fruits and vegetables and will help prevent binge eating. You'll feel full, satisfied and nourished. My favorite green smoothie is of course the Green Vida smoothie. Blend Kale, pineapple, avocado, granny smith apple, fresh mint and juice from half a lemon with water. This smoothie is high in calcium and vitamin A, C and K. This smoothie is also high in fiber and contains healthy fats from the avocado and digestive enzymes from the pineapple and apple. Mint and lemon are also great for digestion.
5. When hungry, we must listen to our bodies. Hydrate and nourish it with healthy foods and drinks. Don't feel guilty. Always keep healthy snacks, fruits and vegetables on hand. Avoid buying salty snacks and sweets. Snacks don't need to come in a bag. You can have a hard-boiled egg, plain yogurt with berries, a piece of organic fruit or vegetables, hummus or avocado with toast and, my favorite, an organic cold-pressed juice. Cold-pressed juices provide nutrients from pounds of fruits and vegetables. The body absorbs the nutrients immediately because there is no fiber to digest. So, choose a green juice with a variety of green vegetables for higher benefits and nutrients. My favorite is a Green Vida Co. 100 percent organic Green Detox. Each bottle contains over two pounds of cucumber, celery, kale, romaine lettuce, granny smith apple, ginger root and lemon. Unlike grocery store juices, Green Vida juices are raw and unpasteurized.
