“Our nitro coffee starts with our cold brewing method. We use about twice as much ground coffee as our traditional hot brew and let it steep for at least 24 hours,” says Joseph Langdon, who co-owns ThreeBirds Coffee House and ThreeBirds Nest with Jennifer Murray. “This process produces a beverage that is richer, smoother, less acidic and more caffeinated than traditional iced coffee.”
What does that process entail? “We keg our cold brew under high-pressure nitrogen, which creates an oxygen-free environment that keeps the coffee fresh and flavorful,” he explains. “Special equipment in our draft system blends the gas with the coffee, producing a beverage with creamy microfoam, similar to a draft stout—it even cascades the same way!”
The nitro coffee is available in 32-ounce and 64-ounce Mason jars, and they offer a discount for anyone who brings their own growler. “Like any carbonated beverage, or in this case, nitrogenated, it will lose some bubbles over time, but it will stay delicious for days.” Langdon says buying it in bulk is a great option to get you through the week or as a fun treat to share with coworkers.
This season, also be sure to try two of their most popular iced drinks. The hibiscus lemonade is their in-house cold-brewed, sparkling hibiscus tea, layered on top of their ginger turmeric lemonade. “Try it with a splash of cayenne honey for some spicy deliciousness,” he suggests. “Another popular cold drink is espresso and tonic—a combo that admittedly sounds a bit strange if you haven't tried it. The cool chocolatey flavor is perfect for summer.”
But if you're looking for plain ole iced coffee, you won't find it at either ThreeBirds location, as Langdon and Murray insist that icing their regular coffee would dilute it too much. “Instead, we offer made-to-order iced Americanos—a shot of espresso lengthened with water and served over ice. The result is close to a traditional iced coffee profile, with a little hint of espresso punchiness.”
