When you prefer your meat and potatoes with a classic Irish twist then a plate of Shepherd's Pie at McCarthy's can be the tasty ticket. It's this dish, not the American-ized corned beef and cabbage, that is a traditional St. Patrick's Day staple, and we happen to agree with Chef Kelly Thos. Shay that it's a much better alternative. Ground lamb, onions and carrots are flavored with a complex mix of stout, red wine, lamb broth, Worcestershire sauce and sage, then topped with a healthy heap of homemade mashed potatoes. And don't get confused: it's lamb not beef that is most popular in Shepherd's Pie, Chef Shay says. “We used to make it with beef, however, after so many ex-pats asked us to consider the traditional version, we did. We ended up keeping the beef version as well, and renaming it to its classic moniker, Cottage Pie.” Wash it down with a spicy ginger beer and you'll be saying Sláinte in no time.
