Lazeez is an Arabic word that means “delicious,” and the family-run Lazeez Fresh Mediterranean Grill has been doing its name justice ever since opening in South Whitehall Township in 2009. Owner Adnan Haddad credits his mother with imparting her superior cooking skills to him. “Our signature dish is our original and famous chicken shawarma wrap,” he says. “It’s out of this world but we also make the best rice bowls.” There are other popular Mediterranean dishes on the menu, too, like falafel and baba ghanouj. Everything is made fresh from scratch—no cans or preservatives. Lazeez also has vegetarian and glutenfree options.

Capo & Co.
Favorite Emmaus
Antonio Mannino’s first restaurant was all about transporting patrons to his native Sicily. Now that same restaurant—with a different name and a much different look—is more like a trip back in time to 1920s Chicago. Mannino is the owner of Capo and Co., a modern speakeasy that occupies the space that previously housed Italiano Delite, Mannino’s first foray into the Emmaus restaurant scene in the 1990s. Capo serves up a variety of modern American fare, like wings, burgers and house-made meatballs. And, of course, what’s a speakeasy without booze? “We have a self-tap beer and wine wall with a rotating range of 22 craft microbrews and four Italian wines,” says general manager Lauren McMakin.

Pizza Joe’s
Favorite Nazareth
There is no shortage of pizza places and Italian restaurants in the Lehigh Valley area, and in Nazareth in particular. And yet, no roundup of the best pasta and pies in the region would be complete without Pizza Joe’s. Husband and wife Jerry and Janel Bubba have been at the helm since 1993, when they took the reins from thenowner Giuseppe Triscari. “We expanded the menu from pizzas, calzones and a few dinners to a full menu of a variety of pastas, chicken, seafood, veal, cold and hot subs and various lunch specials,” says Janel. It’s a nofrills, family-friendly kind of place where the penne vodka is a huge hit, and so is the Sicilian pizza.

Assante Ristorante Italiano
Favorite Northampton
The Assante family has been running Northampton’s go-to spot for Italian cuisine from the Naples region for more than two decades. Mario and Luisa Assante established the restaurant in 2003, two years after emigrating from Naples with their four children: Rosanna, Giulio, Nic and Nunzia. All of the Assantes are still heavily involved in running the place. “We strive to make everyone feel like family when you dine with us,” Rosanna says. She recommends the Gnocchetti Di Mauro. “It’s fresh gnocchi sautéed with garlic, fresh tomato, crab meat and shrimp in a light cream sauce with a touch of marinara.”

Gio Italian Grill
Favorite Macungie /Fogelsville
It all began with an oven for Tony and Giovanna DiMaio; a Wood Stone open-flame oven, to be exact. In the mid-2000s, the husband and wife, each with Sicilian roots and experience working in family restaurants, were looking to open their own place but needed just the right kind of oven to perfect that old-world style of cooking. Once they settled on that, the food, wine and décor that would become Gio Italian Grill began to take shape around it. Naturally, the open-flame pizza is a must-try, but there’s much more to the menu than that. “We have old Italian classics yet unique items also,” says Giovanna. That includes the eggplant caponata and homemade sausage.

The Shelby
Favorite Bar
Even without the promise of an expertly crafted cocktail, The Shelby’s bar is an enticing gathering space all on its own, with a sizable seating area, roomy bar tops and green and tropical accents. Owner Donny Petridis describes the vibe as polished casual. But let’s get back to those drinks. The espresso martini is a crowd pleaser, and so are the old fashioneds. In fact, The Shelby’s version was so popular that they recently added an entire old fashioned section to the menu. “We now have old fashioneds with barrel-aged gin, tequila and a spicy rye whiskey,” Petridis says. You don’t even need to be boozy to belly up to the bar. The Shelby does upscale mocktails, too.
