My delicious spaghetti and garlic bread…before I polished it off!
What better way to get back to blogging than to write about an event that pays tribute to one of Allentown’s most treasured menus? Being the foodie that I am, I jumped on the chance to check out Cosmopolitan’s first-ever Sal’s Spaghetti House dinner last Tuesday evening. I grabbed my fellow Style staffer, Denise, and off we went on a ladies’ night out. I have to admit, there’s nothing quite like wrapping up a cold winter day with a steaming hot bowl of spaghetti, fresh garlic bread and a glass of wine…ok maybe two!
It was quite a treat for me to learn and take part in a bit of Allentown’s culinary history. Located in what is now Cosmopolitan, Sal’s Spaghetti House was owned by Sal Poidomani, and first opened its doors in 1977. They quickly became known for their tasty homemade spaghetti sauce, which is now being offered in select stores nationwide. The go-to Italian eatery for Allentown locals also offered meatball sandwiches, lasagna, ravioli and many other favorite dishes.
Fast forward 36 years and Sal’s Spaghetti House has evolved into Sal’s Spaghetti House Pasta Sauce Company created by Sal’s son, George, with the help of his college fraternity, Delta Delta Tau. In keeping with tradition, George has brought back his father’s famous sauce, along with unique additions to the brand including home pasta parties and fundraising ideas. Learning how to create this scrumptious spaghetti sounds like a perfect Saturday afternoon to me!
Not only was it nice to try this famous local spaghetti, it was inspiring and refreshing to see tradition remain alive in our community. Every Tuesday night Cosmopolitan will serve Sal’s Spaghetti House original selections—taught to the Cosmo chefs by George himself. And if the generous spaghetti portions aren’t enough, you can always order a piece of the decadent Hess’s Strawberry Pie for dessert that Cosmopolitan has added to the menu (doggie bag may be required)!
