As the cold weather rolls in, many people are eager to escape to somewhere warm and sunny. Don’t let your rush to get out of town have you compromising safety, though. Remember: Safe travel is easy travel!
Here are 6 quick tips for safer getaways:
Stay thin
Before your getaway, go through your wallet and remove unnecessary credit and debit cards, as well as anything displaying personal information that you will not need to present at the airport. Make copies of important documents before you leave, such as your passport, driver’s license and travel tickets, in case something happens to them. Store in a separate location that stays with you.
Lock it up
Lock up or hide wallets, sensitive documents, iPads, smartphones, etc., in the hotel room. Everyone knows someone who has had items stolen at a resort. Any credible resort offers a safe in the room. Use it! At the very least keep valuables well-hidden and out of plain view. Don’t invite temptation.
Don’t stand-alone
Stand-alone ATMs are more likely to have skimming devices placed by criminals to capture your personal data. Stick with bank ATMs whenever possible.
Don’t leave valuable items unattended
Always be in control of your belongings, check on them periodically, and if you have to be away from your belongs, have a family member or friend keep an eye on your stuff.
No checkbook checkout
Checking account fraud is one of the most difficult types of identity theft from which to recover. When traveling, use cash, traveler’s checks or credit cards for purchases. Leave personal checks secured at home.
Don’t brag
You may be traveling the world, but don’t let the world know you’re away. When you share your excitement and plans on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., the social media and Internet worlds assume your home will be unattended. There’s no better opportunity for a thief to empty out your house. Share travel plans with close friends only.
