Asian Pears: Ready for Harvest

Thanks to warm weather and an early spring, Asian pears will be ready to harvest in the later part of August at Subarashii Kudamono, an orchard in Coopersburg. “Instead of the usual kick off to harvest taking place after Labor Day, select varieties of Subarashii's pears are forecasting to be ready before summer's end,” reports the orchard. The Asian pear—also known as the Chinese pear, Japanese pear, Taiwanese pear or sand pear—is round in shape and has a juicy, crisp and sweet flavor. “In short, these pears don't taste like pears.”

Subarashii Kudamono is Japanese for ‘wonderful fruit' and is one of the largest growers of Asian Pears on the East Coast. The orchard offers three sizes of gift boxes filled with fresh Asian pears that can be ordered in advance; they also sell pantry items such as dried Asian pears, Asian Pear Spread, Asian Pear Blossom Honey and Aged Asian Pear Vinegar, all of which can be purchased from their website.
