Patricia Johnson, owner of Ornithea House of Flowers, says she was looking for a better-functioning space for her business when she drove by the Laros Lofts building amidst its renovations. Johnson loves industrial spaces and notes that the owners worked with her to transform her new space into one that felt bright, airy and open—even adding skylights to the ceiling that would allow for great natural light. “The Laros Silk Mill was a famous silk weaving and sewing mill in the 1950s, which I love because in my previous career, I was a clothing designer in NYC for over 40 years,” she shares. “[It's] where I was first introduced to the world of florals in the New York Flower Market.” Additionally, Johnson's grandmother worked at the mill as a warper for several years. “I feel a strong connection and I love my new space at Laros Lofts.” Johnson has been able to use the building's common space for events and intends to offer it for floral-based gatherings and workshops in floral design. “My space has a functional workspace as well as an art-filled consulting area for meetings with potential couples,” she shares. “The move has brought people into my space looking for flowers. Everyone loves flowers, and when they see me walk in with armloads of florals, they are excited and curious.”
