The new exhibit at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum seeks to inspire visitors to reconsider the proud history of Native Americans. The exhibit humanizes Native Americans, portraying them as people in the context of their cultures, families and destroyed civilizations. The first to inhabit America, many scholars believe that Native Americans lived in the Lehigh Valley as far back as sixteen thousand years ago.
This exhibit features hundreds of authentic Native American artifacts, as well as a life-size mural that illustrates Lenape life. Learn about the history in Eastern Pennsylvania through local artifacts, many of which have never been displayed publicly before, and discover how history still lives on today through town names, like Catasauqua, and even the origin of the word “Lehigh.” Celebrate the ancient history of the Native Americans, their time-honored traditions and their respect for the natural world.
