According to Lisa Yelagin and Anne Gerr, the co-owners of Pie + Tart, iced coffee is a big deal in Australia. And so, 20 years ago, when Yelagin arrived in New York during the wintertime, she was amazed by the number of cafes offering iced coffee. She waited months until the weather was finally warm enough to warrant an icy beverage and was both “flabbergasted and horrified” at the sight of a plain glass filled with old, cold coffee being rapidly watered down by too many ice cubes.
“[In Australia], it’s made with a double shot of fresh espresso, poured over vanilla ice cream (yes), a few ice cubes, a healthy slosh of milk, and generously topped off with whipped cream and cocoa powder or chocolate syrup,” explain Yelagin and Gerr. “Now that’s an iced coffee to get excited about.”
At their Easton shop, customers can enjoy the drink in their beloved black-and-white cow-patterned cups. “It’s a fun and whimsical touch that makes them not only delicious but also ever so photogenic,” they share.
The pair recommends enjoying the drink with their Pasteis de Nata, world-famous Portuguese egg custard tarts.
This fall, which at Pie + Tart is referred to as “High Pie Season,” the shop will celebrate its four-year anniversary. Say Yelagin and Gerr: “We continue to be astounded by how much fun we have, how our customers are truly the best anywhere and how making pie is the best thing in the world.”
