This Friday, June 2, is National Doughnut Day. Not only is this a great excuse to enjoy some doughy, frosted, sugary goodness, but it’s also a good opportunity to check out the local doughnut scene in the Valley.
Yumsters
At YumYum Bakeshops in Quakertown, the Yumsters are chocolate or regular doughnut holes. You can order these tiny doughnuts glazed, powdered, sugared, covered in dutch crumb or sprinkles. Or, if you want a whole doughnut, try one of their 18 filled doughnuts, seven frosted ring doughnuts or one of the 14 crullers.
Cinnamon Swirl
Each doughnut at the Emmaus Bakery is handmade and fried with care. The cinnamon swirl, their most popular doughnut, is topped with white or chocolate icing. The bakery carries other popular treats that are frosted, glazed, powdered and ready to be consumed.
Bavarian Cream
At Vegan Treats Bakery in Bethlehem, a variety of 100 percent vegan and cruelty free sweets are sure to make your mouth water. Their doughnut flavors include Bavarian cream, Boston cream, chocolate sprinkle, triple chocolate and pumpkin pie. They also have special doughnut flavors, for a limited time, like the glazed blueberry pistachio and glazed strawberry limeade. These doughnuts are all good without the guilt.
Piña Colada
At the Frying Dutchman in Kutztown, the inside-out s’more is a seemingly normal doughnut, except for that it’s topped with a marshmallow glaze, gram crackers and chocolate drizzle. Try the Piña Colada, a doughnut with a pineapple glaze and topped with toasted coconut and rum drizzle. There is a variety to choose from, and, at 90 cents each, how could you not try them all? And you should try them all, since there is a $5 minimum per order.
Cronut
There are many different doughnuts at the Mary Ann Donut Kitchen in Allentown, but the real star of the show is their cronut. Cronuts are fried croissant-doughnuts, and you can order one glazed or filled with vanilla crème. Also be on the lookout for their specialty doughnuts, including Fruity Pebbles, maple bacon and more that are only available on certain days. Each doughnut is $1.
Oreo Stuffed
At Vallos Bakery in Bethlehem, the Oreo-stuffed doughnut is exactly what it sounds like. This average doughnut is stuffed with an oreo, fried, frosted with white icing and then topped with Oreo cookie crumbs. Does it get any better? The doughnuts sell out quickly, so make sure you order yours early. Also, if you spend at least $30 and live within 20 miles of the bakery, they will deliver free of charge.
Honeybuns
So these are not really doughnuts, but they who we to judge? The honeybuns at The Bakery Nook in Coplay are available glazed or iced with white frosting, fudge, light chocolate, half and half or peanut butter. For a more traditional doughnut, try one of the jelly, white cream, custard and chocolate filled doughnuts or their peanut butter and jelly or strawberry flavors. Each doughnut is $1.10.
