Grilled cheese is the ultimate comfort food. Hot, melted cheese sandwiched between two slices of bread? It doesn’t get much cozier than that. Its simplicity is part of its charm, but the grilled cheese sandwich is also versatile enough to be reimagined again and again without losing its allure.
In honor of National Grilled Cheese Day on Friday, April 12, enjoy one (or a few) of these toasty options.
Focaccia Grilled Cheese
Easton Wine Project
There are two grilled cheeses to choose from at Easton Wine Project, located inside the Simon Silk Mill. Filed under the “handhelds” section of the menu, their Focaccia Grilled Cheese combines three of Klein Farms’ cheeses (Boursin, Cooper and Monterey Jack) atop toasted focaccia. Or, upgrade to the Brisket Grilled Cheese, which adds slowed-roasted brisket, jalapeño chive spread and caramelized onion. Both sandwiches are served with a side of chips!
Garden Herb Grilled Cheese
House & Barn
Emmaus’s House & Barn has undergone many changes over the years, but its Garden Herb Grilled Cheese sandwich has remained a mainstay. Made with herb goat cheese, basil pesto, cheddar, roasted tomatoes and sautéed mushrooms, it’s nothing like what you once found on the kids’ menu. Their Pork Grilled Cheese is another winner, made with pulled pork, carrot slaw, boom boom sauce and cheddar. Meanwhile, Granny’s Grilled Cheese combines salty bacon, sweet apples, smoked cheddar and delicious onion jam. Go with friends and try all three!
Liberty Street Grilled Cheese
Jay’s Local
Jay’s Local in Allentown serves an elevated classic when it comes to grilled cheese, featuring a cheddar and American blend melted between garlic butter Texas toast. Chase its oozy goodness with the crunch of the garlic dill pickle that’s served on the side. Read more about the eatery's mission here.
MCPPBGC
Hops
We’ve featured this once before—and for good reason. It might be the most loaded grilled cheese sandwich in the Valley. You see, MCPPBGC stands for macaroni and cheese, pulled pork, bacon grilled cheese. The sandwich is an attention stealer and a conversation starter. Order it at both Hops Fogelsville and Hops At The Paddock.
Greg’s 4-Cheese Grilled Cheese
Mitzi’s Table
Topping the list for the number of cheeses used, Mitzi’s rendition incorporates four different varieties (as its name suggests). Find American, cheddar, Swiss and provolone sandwiched between Texas toast. The best part? It’s served with a side of tomato bisque that’s as photogenic as it is delicious.
Grilled Cheese Pizza
Lehigh Pizza
OK, so this isn’t technically a grilled cheese sandwich, but it sure does taste like one! Lehigh Pizza’s Grilled Cheese Pizza is a specialty pie available to order as 14 or 16 inches. Imagine pizza stuffed with cheese and topped with garlic butter and bread crumbs. Yeah, we’re ordering this on Friday.
Grilled Cheese
Café the Lodge
If you’re looking for the most classic of classics, head to Café the Lodge in Easton, where eating great food also benefits a worthy cause. Made with American cheese, the only twist here is that the sandwich is served on grilled sourdough bread, which continues to trend on TikTok.
